Put them in a sit position away from hovering over the toy etc.. Simply loud verbal command - LEAVE IT - or something else? How could one begin to make their dog realize that their toy is mine also and I can take it whenever I want without backtalk?
That would depend largely on the age, maturity, level of training, the knowledge and co-ordination of the handler and the level of learned dominance within the dog. There are many things to consider when looking at specific examples of how best to handle a dominant dog. This is why I suggest people attainthe services of a trainer who can go into far more detail than I can here.

Telling the dog to leave it will do nothing unless the dog has been conditioned to such a responce except maybe got someone bitten if the dog takes such a command as to challenge.

If the dog is young enough and not of extremely dominant nature then doing obedience and teaching the dog what works for us it is what will work for them will generally be enough. For example teaching the dog that if he/she lets go then food is given they will often learn to let go without a fight.

I hope that this helps somewhat,

Mick.
