My cat, Babe, had cysts in his ears that the vet would not remove because of his age (17-18 years old) and they caused ear infections from time to time. When Babe's ears were funky he would shake his head and between the cysts and the medicine he sounded like a pair of maracas 
Anyway, I found a vet who would do the surgery on the cysts (Cyrus's vet today) using a local but by then it was too late...my Babe had colon cancer and I sent him to the Bridge. I was an absolute mess as all of you were.
Sometimes at night while reading I will hear that unmistakeable head shake and smile.
