After my beagle Toby died at age 17, we heard his little wrrrrrrrffff at 4 AM for about a month. He needed to go out during the night for a quick piddle when he got old, and we joked that he was out and then back in his bed before we turned the light off and plodded back upstairs. He definitely hung around for a while before settling in at the Bridge.
