I like the guidelines I've read here before and gotten from our trainer.

When your recall is perfect on a 6' lead, move to a 12' lead, then on to a 20' lead then on to a longer line.

When your recall is great on a long line, you're usually in Advanced Obedience class with plenty of off-lead work under distraction.

I think your dog will be older than 5 months when all that comes together.
