| Re: Calming down the monster in your puppy 101 Definitly "STICKY WORTHY"!!!!! I was surely in the boat you are talking about when we got Gunner. I freaked out over every little behavior I thought was negative, and overanalized it. I was so concerned about him being a problem dog that I forgot all about my role as a leader. I am happy to say that things have turned around on time.
I am now leaving Gunner on leash while supervised around the house, I am on top of his every move and give swift correction when needed, but also make sure to praise, praise, praise his good behavior! I have seen dramatic results and am pleased to my very core!
I agree that getting on the floor w/ your puppy is important. Gunner in almost 8 mos now and he loves floor action! I touch his ears, rub his belly when he turns over, touch around his paws and nails. I love stroking the very end of his muzzle it is as soft as velvet. After we come inside from a walk I love to reward him ( when he is behaved) with his ultimate favorite- Taking off his collar and scratching around his scruff! I can see his contentness.
Gunner is my first dog ever and I now feel so much more confident after the tons of good advice I have read in this forum. I especially love that members take such a proactive stance in educating people like me to become firm , fair , and confident with our dogs. It makes me a much better leader to my dog, thank you. |
