I use a soft woven 5/8" X 20' line. I think I got it at a tack store. thinner cords do tangle. I keep it coiled in my hand, no tension. when he reaches the end, he walks like he would on a loose leash, no pulling. kind of like flying a kite, you have to take up slack and let it out as needed. Since part of what I wanted to do was work on his recall with other things getting his attention, I called him to me often. he did very well, even coming to me when a covey of quail was begging to be chased. sometimes mountain bikers or other hikers with dogs use the same trail, so I wouldn't let him drag the lead. I think if a dog dragged the line, yes it would get hung up.
