It does not mean that you should never get another dog....it means that you should have all of Diesels "issues" solved and gone before you even think about adding another dog.
If you got another dog now...and as you say Diesel has "trust issues" with people...the new dog may learn from Diesel the same bads things.
Then you would have 2 dogs that are not good with strangers....not a good idea.
Try to spend more time with Diesel...give him more walks, training, etc...and leave him with a Kong or a raw frozen marrow bone to keep him busy. Just leave the house without any fuss or muss...do not prolong the goodbye. I always say "I'll be back" and "Take care of the house".
and close the door...without looking back.
