My guess would be that the crate is to keep the dog secure. I know with the club that I train with there are an awful lot of intact dogs around. They are very careful about whom is out with whom. During bitework, all dogs except the one working are put up. During OB, dogs are worked in teams, onw dog on the long down while the other is doing his pattern and vice versa. All other dogs are put up except the dogs that are working. During tracking, again, two dogs working seperate tracks, all other dogs put up while they are working.

Probably a safety thing. That would be my novice guess anyway. ;)
