Sounds like a great opportunity to work on some fun stuff.

If he's not clicker trained and you are interested in the concept, it would be a great time to "load" the clicker. By load I mean teach the dog to associate the clicker with a reward. In my experience, clicker training can be used for all kinds of different stuff.

You could also teach him tricks or "targeting". All good stuff that doesn't require a bunch of physical activity. They should be done in short sessions, but it will give you an opportunity to keep him mentally engaged and keep you from having to feel miserable to spend time with him.
