Depending on your vet, the cost to microchip (AVID) is approx. $30.00. You then have an additional fee to pay when you actually register the dog with the chip company. Avid has various cost programs available.
Anymore, it is just about second nature for any vet, animal control, or animal shelter to scan for a chip when a dog comes in. Doesn't matter if the dog comes in as a stray, or as an owner relinquish. Most facilities now have universal scanners that can scan for any type of chip at one time. We even had a case where a dog had been missing for over 6 months. The person who had found the dog, decided to just keep and not notify anyone. That same person eventually took the dog to a vet for vaccinations, and when telling the vet his story about how he got the dog, the vet became suspicious. He had the dog taken into the back and scanned. Low and behold there was our microchip and we were notified.
We have been microchipping our rescue dogs for years, and during that time we have had no less than 10 returned to us because of the microchip. Just getting one back makes the program successful.
