| Remembering my Sassy... It has been 5 years since my Sassy passed away. We had seen her at a local training academy and they were unable to breed her so we took a chance on her. At the time, we were a little worried because we had a male German Shepherd already in the house and we did not know how they would actually get along. They got along fine at the academy, but what about at home.
The reason they could not breed Sassy was because she was just "not having it" with the males they set her up with and she ended up mauling them pretty good. She was a big gal, going around 135 lbs but to our surprise she fit in our home and with our Eddie like a glove. They bonded immediately and became inseperable. We were so relieved. They both followed my wife like her shadow and she spoiled them rotten. She was a 135 lb lap dog and I guess all she ever wanted is all we ever want, to be loved and be made to feel like part of a family. To this day, I believe that we came across Sassy for a reason and I am so grateful for the time we had with her. I know she and Eddie are playing and keeping a watch out for each other in paradise. Someday I will see her again and we will all be together for eternity. What I remember most is how Sassy would jump in front of Eddie whenever some idiot dog would try and challenge him. Eddie was 130 lbs and could take care of himself but Sassy would always "take care of his light work". She loved people but she did not like other dogs to bother Eddie or my wife. When my wife used to walk our first daughter in the stroller, Eddie and sassy would walk on each side of the basket and act as my daughters sentrys. It was quite a site. Sassy was so gentle with our daughter, I remember her waiting until my daughters tiny hand completely released her treat before she would gently grab it with her gums. It was if she knew that my daughter was so helpless and fragile. My lasting memory is a picture in my mind of Eddie and Sassy sleeping at the foot of my daughters crib and they would both walk my wife down to the kitchen and back if she had to feed her in the middle of the night. How is that for a supposedely "vicious breed". Rest in peace always Sassy, take care of Eddie and remember we will be together one sweet day... |
