I've heard of methods like that. It is a more physical version of negative association. Everytime the puppy bites or nips, if you place him in a position of discomfort, he will associate it with the nipping. Sooner or later, it'll sink in that he will become uncomfortable if he bites. If you trust and like your vet, I certainly don't see this as being any different that any other form of correction for your problem, and I believe that it will work. Just follow his instructions, and you should be fine.
