The best way to establish yourself and other family members as being higher members in the pack is through obedience training.

Puppies are first exposed to this by their mother shortly after birth. The Dam is the indisputable leader of the litter and she keeps the pups in-line.

When the puppies assert their independence, the dam reprimands them by a growl, swat of the paw, or a scruff shake; all actions of a leader and the pups learn to respect the wishes of the leader and want to please the alpha of the pack.

Obedience training builds on the basic framework the dam has established and will earn the respect you and your family need from your dog. :)
